Hollywood's heroines are in the midst of a paradigm shift. Take Jennifer Lawrence, for instance. Sure, she'll always be our Katniss, and yes, she's still the screen darling du jour with another award-buzzy movie on deck—Passengers, with Chris Pratt. And she once again topped Forbes's list of the highest-paid actresses. But here's why she's a real-life heroine: A year ago, she wrote her now-famous Lenny Letter essay asking "Why Do I Make Less Than My Male Co-Stars?" and galvanized a notable, encouraging trend in Hollywood that's seeing women in the industry use their influence and position to finally battle oppression against and open doors for other women. Which is why ELLE is using the occasion of our annual Women in Hollywood Power List to celebrate the female insiders who are creating such change: the budding actresses not only commanding substantial roles but—like the Melissa McCarthys and Sandra Bullocks before them—starting production companies to create more of them; the directors making big, beautiful films (with, finally, big, beautiful budgets); the writers inventing fierce, flawed, believably real, and sometimes superhuman characters; the editors and cinematographers proving that sports and outer space are realms ripe for a woman's point of view; and, last but not least, the wealth of new faces and fresh voices who are following their luminous predecessors in driving the conversation of equality in Hollywood not just forward, but at warp speed—no capes needed.
