Everybody wants to be friends with Christian Siriano.
Backstage at his Spring 2017 fashion show, the models chat him up. The photographers give him high fives. The makeup artists ask for selfies. And the swarm of press, It Girls, and actual besties (some of whom, like Coco Rocha and Leigh Lezark, overlap) thrum in the background.
Of course, Siriano's used to it. As one of America's most inclusive designers, a gay rights and animal rescue advocate, and truly nice guy, he's proving that running a successful business doesn't have to be a heartless enterprise.
Did we mention that he's got a lot of fans? We spied some of them—including Neve Campbell and Kelly Osbourne—en route to interview the 30-year-old about his latest line, his commitment to women of all sizes, and his Hollywood home runs.
It's a little loud here, so tell me if I heard right: this collection is inspired by Capri Sun? Like, the juice box?
No! But that's awesome. [Laughing] No, our girl's going to Capri for fun. We've got an Italian island vibe.
Ohhh.
Yeah! I've been really into a light, bright playfulness that's been missing. I looked at these '60s and '70s photos of Jackie O. She went to Capri every summer, but she was always a little more playful, a little more colorful, than she was in 'normal' life. And it was exciting to see her a little bit "off duty." The colors are from awning stripe umbrellas, from a really clear ocean, and from ripe citrus.
Pretty! You dress everyone in Hollywood. Which celebrity is responsible for bringing you the most sales?
Hmmm... Honestly, when Gwyneth Paltrow wore a dress of ours, that was probably our number one best seller besides when the lovely Mrs. Obama wore our dress. I think Zendaya moves product well. We love her! That pink suit she wore of mine sold very well. When Oprah wears something, it works out, too. But if someone's having "a moment," that always helps. You've got to look at the timing. But Mrs. Obama. Gwyneth. Zendaya. Those are women who inspire other women's style for sure.
