For over a decade, Afropunk Fest has been one of the most popular events held in Brooklyn, NY in celebration of black music and culture. In June, the festival was held in Paris for the second year in a row as the event continues to expand throughout the diaspora. Women from all over Europe came to enjoy the festival's indoor concert performances and the outdoor market.
My objective in attending the event was to capture street style and beauty testimonies forBeyondClassicallyBeautiful.com's ongoing "Real Beauty Moment" photo series. I started the website to celebrate the diverse beauty of black women. A large part of my mission is getting women to share their personal stories regarding beauty and identity and how they've managed to overcome the obstacles they've faced. The women I interviewed at Afropunk Paris spoke candidly about racial issues in Europe and how they work through society's narrow standards of beauty.
As a journalist who photographs style and documents the beauty testimonies of black women in the U.S., doing this work abroad allowed me see that no matter where we live our stories are universal and they manifest in how we dress, how we regard our hair, and how we honor ourselves.
