Qandeel Baloch, one of Pakistan’s most famous and controversial social media stars, has been strangled to death by her brother in what appears to be the country’s highest profile honour killing.
Baloch, 25, was from the Punjabi town of Kot Addu, made more headlines after posting selfies on her Instagram account with Mufti Abdul Qavi, a senior member of the clergy. The bizarre pairing led to frenzied media coverage and resulted in Qavis’s suspension from his post on one of Pakistan’s religious committees.
Qandeel, who became famous for her viral videos on Facebook, her previous stunt which spread in social media was that she promised to strip dance for her nation and to dedicate her dance to cricketer Shahid Afridi if Pakistan won the Twenty20 match against India on 19 March 2016.

Pakistani actress, TV host and model, Veena Malik, made the headline for most of her work. She was seen drunk with her fellow directors and controversy resulted in Pakistan over a nude image of her on the cover of FHM magazine India edition in which she had “ISI” written on her upper arm. Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar, came into limelight after the death of Congress politician Shashi Tharoor’s wife Sunanda Pushkar. Pushkar, was found dead on January 17, 2014. The death came just a day after she was involved in a spat with Tarar on Twitter over the latter’s alleged affair with Tharoor. Tharoor and Tarar had met in Delhi in a program.
However, Mehr has denied having any ‘proximity’ or ‘relationship’ with Shashi Tharoor.

A Pakistani woman, Mukhtaran Mai, from the village of Meerwala, in the rural tehsil of Jatoi of the Muzaffargarh District of Pakistan. In 2002, Mukhtaran’s brother Abdul Shakoor, then 12 years old, was suspected and accused by the Mastoi of committing fornication with a Mastoi woman, Salma, also known as Nasim. After that Mukhtaran Mai was the survivor of a gang rape by four Mastoi men as a form of honour revenge, on the orders of a tribal council.
Although custom would expect her to commit suicide after being raped, but Mukhtaran spoke up and punished the criminals. She remains an outspoken advocate for women’s rights. She started the Mukhtar Mai Women’s Welfare Organization to help support and educate Pakistani women and girls.
