Zendaya Claps Back at Mullet Haters, Schools Us on Keeping it Real

"They were talking about it, so I'd say it worked out."

DIY-makeup guru and newly crowned CoverGirl Zendaya is also the face of CHI haircare. At a party last night to celebrate her CHI campaign, the Disney alum discussed red carpet regrets, hair styling secrets, and how to keep it real. Oh, and she finally clapped back at her Grammy's mullet haters.

"Some would say the mullet didn't work out. But to me, they were talking about it, so I'd say it worked out," she explained. "I think we can't allow ourselves to get caught up in other people's opinions of ourselves because then we're never going to progress, we're never going to go forward. So we've got to be real. We've got to do what we want to do even if people don't like it." Which doesn't mean that the style oracle is impervious to Internet trolls. "I'm a 19-year-old girl, and it's not easy to just have this massive confidence. There are things that people say that hurt my feelings or whatever, especially with social media right now. It can be the most amazing thing, and it can also be the most negative and detrimental thing."

Even as a hair model, Zendaya is susceptible to bad hair days, but she's prepared for when they strike. "Topknots are really easy, and sometimes my hair does not participate with me, so we've just got to throw it up in that," she says. "If we're having a good day, my curls will actually pay attention to what I tell them to do."
But Zendaya never lets style rules hold her back. "There's no such thing as trends. There's no such thing as style even. It's just whatever you feel. What is cool today is not going to be cool tomorrow, and what wasn't cool yesterday is going to be cool tomorrow," she said before going all Jaden Smith on us. "You can't predict, so you might as well just not follow the trends and make your own because that's how people do it, and that's how it's supposed to be done. The greatest of the greats wouldn't be the greatest of the greats if they didn't try stuff, you know what I mean? So, no, I don't regret anything. I'm very happy with all of the choices we have made."
