Pakistan To Send Buddhist Relics To Sri Lanka For Festival

COLOMBO: The government of Pakistan will provide bone relics of the Buddha to Sri Lanka for exposition throughout the country during the Buddhist festival of Vesak.
The relics kept at the Taxila museum include two bone relics of Buddha, stone reliquary in stupa shape and a golden casket, the Pakistan Embassy said in a statement. Vesak marks the commemoration of the birth, enlightenment and passing away of Gautama Buddha.
The exposition is being organised on the request of the Sri Lankan government under the bilateral cooperation agreement in the field of culture, the statement said, adding that the relics would arrive in Sri Lanka for an extended period on the auspicious day of Vesak on May 21 and will be exhibited until June 19 which marks another significant Buddhist celebration; the Full Moon Poson Poya Day.
A Sri Lankan delegation, including senior Buddhist monks, left for Pakistan on Wednesday to bring the relics which are to be handed over by the Pakistani authorities at a special ceremony to be held at Taxila on Thursday.
