Tegiye Mimi-Ozalp, a Gold Coast mother of four, was determined to launch a business that would allow her to work from home while taking care of her children.

After switching to natural deodorants and realizing that most options available on the market were not effective, she began experimenting in her kitchen to create her own deodorant formula.

Despite initial challenges with the formulation, Mimi-Ozalp persevered and eventually launched her homemade deodorant as the flagship product of her business, Saf Organics.

To raise funds for her venture, Mimi-Ozalp saved every $5 note she received and sold items around the house for $5. With $1500, she was able to purchase 500 containers and labels for her deodorant, which she launched on social media in 2019.

To her surprise, all 500 bottles sold out in the first month, generating $10,000 in sales. Fast forward to four years later, Saf Organics has expanded its product range to 23 items, including low-tox alternatives for hair, skincare, body and bath, and health and hygiene products.

Saf Organics' sensitive skincare range, which incorporates Australian native plants such as the Kakadu plum, has been particularly successful.

While the business started as a one-woman show, the pandemic helped it to boom, and it is now on track to generate over $500,000 in sales this year, up from $360,000 the previous year.

Mimi-Ozalp said the business recently started selling in wholesalers, which has made a massive difference to their sales. Despite the challenges of running a growing business with four young children, Mimi-Ozalp is optimistic about the future and excited to see what the next year holds for Saf Organics.
