ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan said on Monday that he had informed Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa that his party would not put up with another controversial election like the one in 2013.
“I met Gen Bajwa recently and told him clearly that we will not allow 2013-like polls [to be held] in [the] future,” Mr Khan said in an interview with a private TV channel.
When asked why he had announced that Gen Bajwa was a keen supporter of democracy, soon after meeting the army chief, Mr Khan replied because Gen Bajwa had said he believed in democracy.
“However, I told the army chief that democracy was not about holding elections but [about] conducting fair and transparent elections,” he added.
He said Gen Bajwa had assured him that the army would play its due role in holding fair, free and transparent elections in 2018. He added that the meeting took place on his request.
PTI won’t accept another 2013-like election
“I [requested] that army personnel be deployed outside and inside polling stations to foil the traditional rigging tactics [used by] the PML-N.”
Mr Khan said they had discussed several other important issues including security in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas and the appointment of former COAS Gen Raheel Sharif as chief of a Saudi Arabia-led military alliance of 41 Muslim states.
Mashal Khan
The PTI chairman announced that he would visit the residence of Mashal Khan, the slain Abdul Wali Khan University student, on Tuesday to express condolences on his death.
“Tomorrow I am going to meet his family and [I have] ordered the KP inspector general of police to thoroughly investigate the killing,” he said.
“We will bring this case to its logical conclusion and will not spare anyone involved in the murder of the innocent student,” Mr Khan said, adding that the university management would also be made accountable for the tragic incident.
He said that even if Mashal Khan was accused of committing blasphemy, he should have been given a right of defence. “But in this particular case, he did not even commit blasphemy,” he said.
Earlier, Mr Khan chaired a party meeting at his Banigala residence and discussed several important issues, including the much-awaited decision of the Supreme Court on the Panamagate case, and loadshedding in the country. The party decided to kick off a countrywide campaign against loadshedding and the increasing circular debt.
The meeting also reviewed suggestions on how money laundering could be controlled and Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan’s recent statement regarding money laundering. “The elimination of money laundering is impossible till Nawaz Sharif is in power as the prime minister and his brother-in-law are involved in money laundering,” Mr Khan claimed.
The participants noted that the power shortfall had increased to 7,000MW over the past two years. “Media reports say there was a shortfall of 3000MW when Nawaz Sharif came to power,” PTI leader Asad Umar said.

Pakistan’s first opera singer Saira Peter steals hearts in Islamabad

Perched on a stool in front of the mirror in the greenroom of the Pakistan National Council of the Arts auditorium on Friday night, opera singer Saira Peter was visibly excited before her performance.
Saira is Pakistan’s first opera singer, and brought the unique genre of Sufi opera to the capital for the second time. Joined by her music director Steven Smith and her family, Saira was all smiles. “I have performed in many places in the world but there is nothing like coming home. The love for my country and its people is the greatest motivation in anything I do,” she told Dawn.
Born in Karachi, Saira has lived in London for the last few years. She trained as an operatic singer under Paul Knight, who was a student of English composer Benjamin Britten, a legend in Western classical music. “I am proud to have trained under Paul Knight and think of him as my ustaad,” she said.
The unique genre of Sufi opera she performs is a true labour of love, bringing together her training in the western classical tradition of music and her love for Sufi poetry.
“Sufism is an important part of the Pakistani culture. Sufi poets such as Bulleh Shah and Shah Abdul Lateef Bhittai have woven beautiful messages of peace and love in their poetry and I wanted to bring this tradition to the West in their own musical language,” she said.
Saira is also the director of the Noor Jahan Centre in London, which has promoted Pakistani music and culture in London since 1998.
The performance began an hour late; with the management setting up floral arrangements as the hall slowly began to fill. However, the tardiness was soon forgotten with the first performance of the night by Balochi musican Qadim Hussain. The audience clapped along to the uplifting tunes of the beloved Balochi song 'Laila O Laila'.
Saira began her performance of the night with an English translation of Bhittai. The strength of her voice and her vocal range left many in the audience in awe. Her versatility as an artist and her multicultural roots were reflected in her comfort with the variety of genres she performed, ranging from Beethoven to Madam Noor Jahan.
After performing some songs from her latest album Resplendent, Saira sang Celine Dion’s 'The Heart Will Go On', a favourite among the audience.
Many members of the audience were pulled by their curiosity to hear an opera singer perform, due to the rarity of such performances. Audience member Vilima Judy Sahotra told Dawn she had brought her son to hear Saira’s performance because he is training as a gospel singer.
“Tonight’s performance was a treat for music lovers and an educational experience for those interested in Western classical music,” she said.
Saira was accompanied by a group of local musicians with whom she performed. Dholak player Jeevay Laal told Dawn he was honoured to perform with such a talented vocalist.
“Her form of music is truly unique, combining Western and Eastern traditions and instruments. Usually Sufi poetry is only accompanied by Eastern instruments and sang in the Eastern style, so adapting it to the operatic style is a true work of art,” he said.

Veena Malik's comeback single is a tribute to Pakistan's armed forces

After a month's wait, Veena Malik has finally released her much awaited comeback song.
Titled Aye Dushman-e-Watan, the single was launched yesterday at a press con held in Karachi. The video features Veena Malik singing in white shalwar kameez, while a screen behind her plays footage of military operations in Pakistan.
At the launch, the actor was delighted to have the media attention all to herself and thanked everyone for showing up.
"First of all I'd like to say that the press' love and romance for me has not decreased at all, it has only grown. Speaking in regards to this project, I would like to say that I am very excited, happy and proud to share this project with you.
"In my 17-year career, this country has given me a lot: respect, a name, glory, and the love of millions of people. I can't thank you enough for the love," she said.
"First of all, I'd like to say that the press' love and romance for me has not decreased at all, it has only grown," said Veena Malik
And added: "As an actor, as an entertainer if I can express my love for the country through a tribute, it won't be enough. This is a small effort from my part that I've made this anthem and it's my wish that in the coming years, I can completely pay back this country. All my work whether it's in showbiz, or through this anthem, I would like to dedicate my future to this country."
The lyrics of the song have been written by retired lieutenant colonel Kazim Hussain Shah (retd.) who's been honoured with the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz (military).
"I cannot explain everything that I have written (lyrics)," he said. "What impression it gives you, what challenges it's giving to the enemy, you need to see it (video) and analyse it for yourself."
He added, "I will only say that I'm not a professional poet, I'm just passionate about poetry — but I put my heart and soul into it. Somehow, Veena found me and forced me [to write the lyrics]; I told her even my family members don't know that I write poetry, but she only said, 'You have been contributing to your country, so why don't you do it now too?'"
Of course, the press couldn't help asking Veena about her pending divorce.
"For me marriage, or any relationship, is something I hold in high regard. I have not yet taken back the khula but in regards to our reconciliation, Mufti Naeem sahab and Amir Liaquat sahab are in talks [with us] keeping in mind the Pakistani Constitution and the Shariah law -- but if there is a decision that is made, I will let you know. I choose not to talk about this, but since you asked I answered."
Now that she has made her comeback into showbiz, it's unlikely that she'll be leaving again. "People often ask me, 'How long do you think you will act and be in the entertainment industry?' and I've always told them that I will only break ties with the entertainment industry when I die.
And when I knew I wanted to be an actor? I tell my friends, maybe in my mother's womb. Because since I was in fourth grade, I remember at the back of my notebooks, I used to draw eyelashes, liners, high heels, so it's likely that this is what I've always to do. But now everything this country has blessed me with I'd like to give back through anthems, in the forms of songs."

Lok Virsa invited the children of legendary folk artists to take part in a live concert at its Open Air Theatre on Tuesday as part of its annual 10-day Lok Mela.
The event was meant as a tribute to famous folk artists and to provide their younger generation with a platform to perform.
The show started with Akbar Khan Khameso presenting two songs on his Alghoza in tribute to his father, Ustad Khameso Khan. The first was a folk song from Sindh and the second included famous tunes from all the provinces of Pakistan.
Akbar Khameso hails from Sindh and his father was very popular for the Sindhi tunes he played on his Alghoza. The instrument consists of two joined flutes, one for melody and the other from drone. The flutes are either tied together or may be held together.
Mr Khameso was followed by Taj Mohammad Tajal Baloch who plays the banjo and is a music composer as well.
He played two songs and was accompanied by Parveen Rani, a Pashtu singer.
Mr Baloch is the son of Faiz Mohammad Baloch who was a famous Baloch singer and was popular for his unique body language when he would perform. He also played the harp and lute.
Liaquat Paroqi, the son of late Balochi singer Murad Paroqi also took part in the event and a local dance group from Khetraan, Darees performed a dance.
Renowned music composer Wazir Afzal launched his album ‘Rangla Punjab’ on the occasion with Bushra Sadiq presenting his song, ‘Kehndy Ne Naina’.
The son of Pushto singer Zarsanga, Shahzada presented four Pashto songs which were accompanied by tunes on the rubab, tabla and dholak by his team. The upbeat tunes led to many in the audience coming on-stage to dance. Shahzada is the second of Zarsanga’s three daughters and six sons and the only oneof her children to pursue a career in music.
The performances by the younger generations were accompanied by those of their parents in the background.
A member of the audience, Waheed Ahmed told Dawn it was heartening to see performances by the children of legendary artists. He said he hoped the younger generation will be interested in folk music and that it will not fade with time.
“An entire generation of folk musicians rose to glory when there was no media, no social media and their only platforms were local melas, the village choppal (gatherings) and deras,” he said.
Lok Virsa Executive Director Dr Fouzia Saeed said Lok Virsa is making efforts for the preservation and protection of the cultural heritage of the country.

A sublime Shoaib Malik century and equally responsible knock from Mohammad Hafeez inspired Pakistan to a six-wicket win in the third and final one-day against the West Indies at the Providence Stadium, in Guyana, on Tuesday. Pakistan also clinched the series 2-1.
Chasing 234, Pakistan were reeling at 36-3 when Malik joined Hafeez in a decisive partnership of 113 in 128 balls to tilt the balance in favour of the tourists, who protected their 26-year unbeaten streak against the West Indies and also remained eighth in the ICC team rankings.
Man of the match Malik ended the game in style by completing a ninth ODI hundred by hoisting West Indies captain Jason Holder for a six. Malik’s 111-ball effort included 10 fours and two sixes.
Hafeez scored 81 off 86 balls with eight fours and two sixes after the in-form Babar Azam was among three casualties upfront, edging Shannon Gabriel on to the stumps for 16. Earlier Kamran Akmal scooped a catch to covers on the first ball of the chase and Ahmed Shehzad was brilliantly held low to his right by Shai Hope. It was then left to Malik and skipper Sarfraz Ahmed (24) to see Pakistan home with 41 balls left in an unbroken stand of 87.

Earlier, Shai Hope and Jason Mohammed lifted the home side to 233-9 after Holder won his third successive toss, but unlike the opening two fixtures opted to bat first after the start was momentarily delayed by a passing shower.
Hope and Mohammed, who both hit half-centuries, put on 101 after West Indies had slipped to 68-3 in the 19th over. Hope compiled 71 from 112 balls while striking one boundary and two sixes. Mohammed was more enterprising, making 59 off 64 deliveries with five fours and two sixes.
Imad Wasim was easily the pick of the bowlers with 1-24 in 10 overs, while Shadab Khan, Mohammad Amir and Junaid Khan claimed two wickets each.

This slightly sheer top had flares and ruffles at the neckline that added layers, making her torso opaque. She accessorised this look with heels from Gucci and earrings from Aquamarine. Celebrity hairstylist Franco Vallenlogo parted her tresses midways in a pulled back sleek bun. Her makeup by celebrity makeup artist Anil C complimented this timeless black and white ensemble
