Explosion in Parachinar market, 5 killed

A blast at a market in Parachinar killed at least five people and wounded 40 others, a local official said on Friday.
Ikramullah Khan, the local political agent, confirmed the death toll of the blast that took place this morning in the crowded Noor market. The market place is a busy area and has several shops. It is also near one of the main imambargahs.
Security forces have cordoned off the area while emergency services have been dispatched to the site. The political administration has declared emergency at all hospitals in the area. An Army medical evacuation helicopter has also been flown to Parachinar for evacuation of the injured, an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement said.
The attack is reminiscent of a bombing at a market place early this year, which resulted in the death over at least 25 people.
The January attack was claimed by Lashkar-i-Jhangvi al-Alami along with Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) splinter Shehryar Mehsud.
The army had launched Operation Raddul Fasaad last month following a spate of terror attacks in the country, which claimed more than a hundred lives and left hundreds others injured. The operation seeks to eliminate the "residual/latent threat of terrorism", consolidating the gains made in other military operations, and further ensuring the security of Pakistan's borders.
Hundreds of suspected terrorists have reportedly either been killed or arrested in raids carried out by security personnel since the start of the operation.
Parachinar is 250 kilometres west of Peshawar and has a population of 50,000. In the wake of sectarian clashes in 2007 army and paramilitary forces set up several checkpoints on roads leading to the town.
Kurram, the tribal region of which Parachinar is the main town, the only part of Pakistan's border region that has a significant Shia population, has been racked by sectarian violence.

Karachi’s iconic park given to Bahria Town

KARACHI: The Sindh government on Thursday handed over Karachi’s iconic park — Bagh Ibn-e-Qasim — to real estate giant Bahria Town for 10 years in a move which the provincial authorities claimed would save funds and encourage private organisations to carry out social work and public service.
A notification issued by the Sindh local government ministry stated that the decision to hand over the park “for adoption” had been taken after its approval by a competent authority, but made it clear that salary of its staff would be paid by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC).
For this ‘handover’, the Pakistan Peoples Party-led Sindh government first took over the control of the park from the city’s municipal administration mainly dominated by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan.
“In pursuance of notification of even number dated 21-11-2016 and with the approval of competent authority, Bagh Ibn-e-Qasim Park along with aquarium situated in Clifton has been taken over by the local government department from KMC and handed over to M/S Bahria Town Private Limited for adoption as per agreement executed on 30-03-2017,” said the notification.
Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar told a television news channel that he had not been consulted on the handover of the park.
The park is in the vicinity of Bahria Icon Tower — an under-construction 60-storey building of the real estate tycoon which will be the country’s tallest structure after its completion.
But Sindh local bodies minister Jam Khan Shoro made it clear that the organisations adopting parks would not be allowed to use such facilities for commercial purposes.
A statement issued by the MQM on the deal, however, alleged that something more sinister than a simple ‘park adoption’ was under way.
“There are reports that the park was handed over on a condition that Bahria Town can use its eight acres area for commercial activities. We believe that these conditions are equal to exploitation of people’s rights and my party will raise the issue in the assemblies and also approach the court, if needed,” MQM-Pakistan leader Faisal Subzwari said in the statement.
Spread over 130 acres, the park was completed in a record time of 10 months after removing encroachments from 70 acres of its land. It was opened to the public in February 2007 after its inauguration by then president and army chief Gen Pervez Musharraf.
The then city government led by nazim Mustafa Kamal formally began the project in July 2005 and spent Rs500 million to complete the massive structure along the seashore.
The situation at the park started deteriorating in the absence of the local government for nearly five years which also affected the attendance of families at the park.
The new agreement between the provincial government and Bahria Town allowed the real estate company to “take care” of the park for the next 10 years “considering” its contribution to social and welfare projects, the local bodies minister told Dawn. It would definitely save government funds to a large extent, he added.
“It was proposed years ago that the government should hand over parks to those organisations or bodies which want to contribute to government facilities without putting any financial burden on people and without any financial interest,” Mr Shoro said, adding that recent amendments to local bodies rules paved the way for private organisations to adopt parks.
“It’s a practice across the world. The government will make sure that people enjoy cheap and healthy entertainment and recreational activities. This move is not restricted to Bahria Town; any organisation proving its interest in social work and people’s benefit can avail this,” the minister said.

Ivanka Trump is exception to dad’s ‘Buy American’ rule

BEIJING: In his January inauguration speech, US President Donald Trump made a seemingly straightforward pledge: “We will follow two simple rules: buy American and hire American.” His daughter is the exception: even as he spoke, at least eight shipments of Ivanka Trump-branded shoes, bags and clothes — more than 53.5 tonnes — were steaming towards American ports from China, according to US Customs bills of lading examined by AFP.
Trump uses his presidential pulpit to censure manufacturers — both domestic and foreign — for using overseas labour to make goods for American consumers, but the Ivanka-branded orders have kept rolling in.
More than two tonnes of ladies’ polyester woven blouses, 1,600 cowhide leather wallets and 23 tonnes of made-in-China footwear were among at least 82 such shipments that passed US Customs — almost one per business day — from Trump’s November 8 election win through February 26, records showed.
The goods were made in China by three US companies holding licences to manufacture products for Ivanka Trump’s fashion line: garment maker G-III, Mondani Handbags and Marc Fisher Footwear.
Marc Fisher told AFP it had no comment, while the others did not respond to requests.
The first daughter’s business has come under scrutiny since major US department store chain Nordstrom announced in February it would stop carrying her products, citing poor sales.
That provoked a scathing attack from Trump and his advisers and even prompted senior counsellor Kellyanne Conway to urge Americans to go out and buy his daughter’s products.
The Washington Post reported this week that many had done just that, with February proving a banner month for the brand, in terms of sales.
‘Very hypocritical’
More than 1,200 shipments of Trump-branded products have flowed into the US from China and Hong Kong over the past decade, according to an examination of US import data last year by anti-Trump political action committee Our Principles PAC.
During his campaign, Trump defended the licensing of the Trump name for goods made in China — from shoes to ties to dress shirts — as smart business.
But at the same time he frequently accused China of stealing US jobs through unfair trade practices and currency manipulation, while also slamming US firms such as Ford and Nabisco for off-shoring.
Since taking office, he has kept up the pressure, vowing to punish domestic and foreign companies that manufacture abroad with massive tariffs of as much as 45 per cent.
His frequent fusillades have led some companies to second-guess decisions to build production facilities overseas.
In February, Japanese firm Nisshinbo Holdings, a leading global maker of automobile brake parts, dropped plans to open a factory in Mexico, saying it was due to Trump’s trade policies.
But the president has been notably silent on his daughter’s products, which are sold in American retailers like Macy’s, Lord & Taylor and TJ Maxx.
G-III alone sold $29.4 million of the goods in 2015, and sales in the first nine months of 2016 were up $13.3m over the same period the previous year, according to the company’s public filings.
But rather than chide his daughter’s partners for making their products abroad, Trump instead lashed out at Nordstrom last month after it announced it would stop carrying Ivanka’s fashion range.
“My daughter has been treated so unfairly by @Nordstrom,” he tweeted.
Christopher Balding, an expert on Sino-US trade relations at Peking University, called it “very hypocritical to make [bringing jobs back to the US] a policy plank and manufacture her products in China”.
But “in their defence... she couldn’t get those products manufactured in the US at a reasonable price point.”
However, a long-time garment industry executive, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told AFP simple products like polyester dresses could “definitely” be made in the US at a similar price once savings from transportation and tariffs are factored in. “The less labour involved in making the garment, the more they can compete with Asian manufacturers.”
‘Tough policies’
Late last month, Ivanka sat in on a White House meeting where her father discussed “tough policies” to bring “our jobs back”.
“Everything is going to be based on bringing our jobs back,” the president said, as he addressed a group of manufacturing moguls from a dozen American firms.
Following the meeting, a spokesperson for the Ivanka Trump brand told AFP the company has “consistently expressed that we share industry leaders’ interest in bringing more manufacturing opportunities to the US and are looking forward to being a part of the conversation”.
Just not yet: two days later, more than 5,000 Ivanka Trump polyester blouses arrived in Newark, New Jersey.
And at least one shoe factory in southern China has received an order for 10,000 shoes for next season, according to Chinese newspaper Global Times.—AFP

Efforts initiated to recover Pakistanis kidnapped in Turkey

RAWALPINDI: Kidnappers who abducted three Pakistanis in Turkey have not contacted the victim’s families after the deadline for the ransom passed on Saturday evening. However, authorities in Islamabad have initiated efforts to recover the Pakistanis safely and end the crisis.
An official from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) told Dawn the Pakistani embassy has taken up the case, while the FIA has been in touch with the families of the captives.
The official said the agency has also been in contact with the Pakistani embassy in Turkey, to whom it has provided important information regarding the kidnapping.
After the FIA began looking into the case, the relatives of the victims – Zeeshan Jahandad, Ghulam Fareed and Mudassar Ali – were contacted by senior FIA officials from the anti-human trafficking wing for details about the kidnapping.
Mehtab, who is related to Mr Jahandad, said the officials sought written details about the kidnapping and assured them the Pakistani authorities had initiated efforts to recover the three men.
He said they are particularly worried since the ransom deadline passed, as none of the captives had contacted them and the kidnappers had threatened to kill them during their last conversation on Saturday.
He said the kidnappers demanded $20,000 for each man, and refused to extend the ransom deadline.
Two of the three victims are from the Katarian village in Rawat, while the third is from Gujar Khan. They had intended to travel on to Europe from Turkey when they were abducted by unidentified individuals who contacted their families in Pakistan and demanded a ransom for their safe release.
The kidnappers reportedly tortured the captives, and allowed one of the victims, 24-year-old Mr Jahandad, to speak to his father Jahandad Khan. Mr Mehtab said Mr Jahandad asked his father to arrange the ransom or the kidnappers would kill him.
Mr Mehtab said Mr Khan was first contacted on March 6, soon after the kidnapping, and then in a call on Friday the kidnappers told them the deadline for the payment was Saturday.
Mr Mehtab said Mr Jahandad’s arms and legs were fractured by the kidnappers, because he had been screaming from pain while speaking over the phone.
Mr Fareed, who belongs to Gujar Khan, left his hometown on Eidul Azha and travelled to Turkey after paying a travel agent a huge amount of money. Iftikhar Ahmed, one of his relatives, said the kidnappers gave them a four day period to arrange the ransom and did not tell them where the money was to be delivered.
Previously, six Pakistani nationals who were kidnapped in Turkey were recovered by the Turkish authorities in early January and sent back to Pakistan.

Chinese, Turkish troops will participate in Pakistan Day parade, says ISPR

The military's media wing on Monday announced that the contingents of Chinese and Turkish armies will participate in the Pakistan Day parade later this month.
Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor said in a tweet that Chinese soldiers will take part in the parade being held on March 23, to mark the Pakistan Day celebrations.
A Turkish military band will also participate in the parade, the tweet added.
The parade is organised by joint staff headquarters in Rawalpindi, which oversees the three armed forces of Pakistan.
Contingents of the Pakistan army, navy and air force have reportedly arrived in the federal capital for parade rehearsals, with stringent security measures in place.
The military parade was resumed in 2015 after a gap of seven years and was seen as a manifestation of the military's show of strength in the wake of the shocking attack on the Army Public School (APS) in Peshawar in 2014, which left 150 people dead, including 132 schoolchildren.
Pakistan Day commemorates the passing of the Lahore Resolution, when a separate nation for the Muslims of The British Indian Empire was demanded on March 23, 1940 as well as the declaration of the republic on the same day in 1956.

Watch Angelina Jolie's Dreamy First Commercial for Guerlain

As announced back in January, Angelina Jolie is currently the new face of Guerlain Parfumeur–her first beauty campaign since 2007 for Shisheido. The brand just released her commercial for the new fragrance, Mon Guerlain, titled "Notes of a Woman." In it, Jolie beautifully frolics and pampers herself in the French countryside.

Guerlain's master perfumer, Thierry Wasser, said that the fragrance was inspired by the actress herself and is meant to evoke "the choices, emotions, and dreams that embody modern femininity."

Jolie was compelled to partner with Guerlain because it reminded her of her mother, who used a powder from the brand. She donated all of the pay she would have received from the endorsement to charity.
