Salman Khan is truly sabki aan, sabki shaan, sabka ek bhaaijaan. He has mentored a lot of young talent in Bollywood and has launched one too many heroines. Natasha Khan understands how, to many, The Bride, a 13-song concept album and her fourth under the alias Bat For Lashes, may seem, well, a bit depressing. After all, the UK-born singer's new LP tells the tale of its soon-to-be-wed protagonist whose fiancé is killed in a car crash moments before they are to marry. But Kahn, a multi-disciplinary artist who studied music and visual arts in college, and who since her 2006 debut, Fur and Gold, has used her outré music as a complimentary vehicle for immersive performance art, sees things a bit differently.

"People like to fixate on the dark or the light [in life]," Khan says, "but I think the most beautiful is the co-mingling of the two. Honor your body

Your specific [weight loss] program may differ from someone else’s based on climate, geography, heredity, the quality of the food you’re buying, the volume in which you’re eating that food, and so much more. A lot people take advice that doesn’t honor themselves. What works for me is not going to work for you. It’s just not. So really, it’s [about] having an honest look at who you are, what your tendencies and triggers are, and how you can build a program that revolves around that.

Don’t take on too much too fast

I often see a lot of spirit in the beginning. But people don’t yet have a lot of the tools in place to keep it going. Oftentimes, instead of practicing success, they practice quitting—because they’re taking on so much that they can’t keep up. Then comes the [thought], I’m failing, I knew it was stupid to try. My advice is to layer your responsibilities so that you don’t take on too much too fast. Pick something during week one, and replicate it every day to see how it makes you feel. [Consider] how it changes your workouts, how you look, how it affects your energy. Then during week two, add something else. It could be as simple as tracking your water, or putting a bar in your purse to keep from unhealthy snacking. It’s more affective in the long run when you layer in the responsibility.

Outsmart your cravings

If you’re craving something sweet, it’s because one or both of these things are happening: 1) You’re dehydrated 2) You’re not eating enough. When your body is feeling malnourished—which is what happens when you are not getting enough water or eating enough calories—your body starts to crave the most accessible source of energy it can find: simple sugars. 

My solution is to make sure you’re eating enough and drinking enough water, because that’s really what the reaction is. I used to always have cravings, but I finally started eating a lot more and getting more water in and I never have them anymore. If you start to take the sugar out of your body, the cravings go down—just like an addict with any type of drug. Once these cravings stop, you have a different relationship with these foods, and [you get the] power back. 

Pick your "non-negotiable"

People are so hard on themselves. It’s important to realize that this weight loss journey doesn’t happen overnight. People sometimes have unrealistic expectations about how the weight loss is going to go. It’s not that it is going to plateau [indefinitely], but your body needs to re-calibrate with the weight loss, and then you’ll start to drop again. I recommend identifying your "non-negotiable." Think about, no matter what your weight is doing, no matter how busy you get, what are you never going to compromise? For me, I will never [do less than] two workouts a week.

Learn from your missteps (because they will happen)

Give yourself permission to be human. We’re all going to have missteps. But know that you can find your footing again, and learn from why you fell off the wagon. When I overeat, instead of hating myself for it, or completely giving in for the week, I sit and I think, What led up to that? I start to put the pieces of the puzzle together and figure out how I can change things next time. Once you identify what these reactions are, you can see them coming and navigate around them.

You may not, on the other hand, know her sister Arielle Hawkins. But that's about to change. In conjunction with GK Elite and another Douglas sister, Joyelle, Hawkins is flexing her style prowess to design Gabby's US Olympic Team leotard.

"Being on this gymnastics journey with Gabby has required a lot of sacrifices," the 26 year old admits to ELLE.com. "It meant putting my life and career plans on hold, in order to be there for my sister and family." But through filming their family reality show, Douglas Family Gold, a multi-part series that chronicles Douglas' road to the Olympics, Hawkins found the kick in the pants she needed to finally follow her own path. "The reality show has pushed me to actually start thinking again about my dreams," she says. 

Designing Douglas' leotard for the P&G Gymnastics Championships is just the first stop on the journey. "I wanted to combine the look of an elegant gown while maintaining a fierce competitive look," Hawkins says of what inspired the design. With its illusion neckline, ombre coloring, and intense embellishment, it's clear that Hawkins has an understanding of what works. And with just a few more weeks on the road to Rio, its also obvious that Hawkins has found the best model in sister Douglas, as well as the keys to a bright future.

اسی طرح سندھی میں نامور افسانہ نویس و ناول نگار امر جلیل نے کسی زمانے میں اروڑ جو مست (اروڑ کا دیوانہ) کہانی لکھی تھی جو کہ ایک ڈاکو عارب ماچھی کا قصہ ہے جو اروڑ میں پیر بن کر لوگوں کو دونوں ہاتھوں سے لوٹتا ہے۔ جس میں وہ کہتا ہے کہ سندھ میں ڈاکو بنو یا پیر ایک ہی بات ہے۔

چند روز قبل سندھ کے شہر فیض گنج، ضلع خیرپور میں ایک ایسی ہی عورت کو ایک پیر کے حوالے کیا گیا کیونکہ اس کے شوہر اور رشتے داروں کو شبہ تھا کہ اسے کسی جن نے اپنے بس میں کر لیا ہے۔

پیر نے جن نکالنے کے بہانے غنویٰ راجپر کے جسم کو گرم سلاخوں سے داغا، اور پھر برف پر لٹا دیا، جبکہ اسے صرف ملیریا ہوا تھا، جو کہ ڈاکٹر کی ہلکی پھلکی دوا سے بھی اتر جاتا۔

زخموں سے چور غنویٰ اس لیے زندگی کی جنگ ہار گئی کہ اس کے زخم ناسور بن چکے تھے، مگر پھر بھی یہ سمجھا گیا کہ وہ اب تک کسی جن کی قید میں ہے اور جب تک وہ جن اسے قید سے آزاد نہیں کرے گا تب تک وہ صحتیاب نہیں ہو پائے گی۔

سندھ کے حکمرانوں کو سندھ صرف گل و گلزار نظر آتا ہے۔ انہیں سندھ کا ایک یہ چہرا بھی دیکھ لینا چاہیے جوکہ نہ صرف بھیانک ہے، بلکہ کربناک بھی ہے، جس میں عورت کو کسی جانور کی طرح کسی کے بھی حوالے کیا جاسکتا ہے، وہ اسے مار ڈالے یا اس کا جینا اجیرن کر دے مگر اسے اپنے منہ سے آواز نکالنے کے لیے منع کیا جاتا ہے۔

سندھ میں پیر پرستی کی مضبوط روایات کی وجہ سے آج تک کتنی ایسی لڑکیاں اور عورتیں ہیں جو موت کی بھینٹ چڑھ چکی ہیں اور اس امکان کو بالکل بھی رد نہیں کیا جاسکتا کہ یہ سلسلہ مزید چلتا جائے گا کیونکہ ان پیروں اور حقیقی وڈیروں اور جاگیرداروں کی بقا اسی میں ہی ہے۔

غنویٰ راجپر بھی انہی تمام عورتوں کی طرح ایک ایسی موت کا شکار ہوئی ہے جو کہ جہالت کی وجہ سے ہوئی۔ وہی جہالت جو صدیوں سے انسانی دماغ پہ راج کر رہی ہے۔

آج بھی ہمارے ملک میں جن نکالنے، کسی کے دل میں گھر کرنا اور پسند کی شادی کرنے جیسے اشتہار ہماری دیواروں پر اتنے زیادہ ہیں کہ شاید سیاسی نعرے بھی اتنے نہ ہوں۔ اشتہارات کا دعویٰ ہوتا ہے کہ ان کے جنتر منتر ہر ناممکن کو ممکن بنا سکتے ہیں، اور ایسے لوگوں پر سب سے زیادہ یقین کم تعلیم یافتہ لوگ کرتے ہیں۔

کتنی عورتوں کے نفسیاتی اور جنسی مسائل کو بنا سمجھے ہی یہ تصور کیا جاتا ہے کہ ان پر جنات کا سایہ ہے اس لیے انہیں فوری طور پہ ایسے بھیڑیوں کے حوالے کیا جاتا ہے جو چند روپوں کی خاطر کسی کی جان کی پرواہ تک نہیں کرتے۔

کسی بھی انسان کی نفسیاتی بیماریوں کا حل نہ صرف یہ کہ میڈیکل سائنس میں موجود ہے بلکہ ان کا علاج مشکل نہیں ہے۔ بلکہ ان کا حل ایک بہتر ماحول اور بہتر تربیت سے ممکن ہے۔

مگر یہ سوال بھی اپنی جگہ پر اہمیت کا حامل ہے کہ لوگوں کا اعتبار ڈاکٹروں سے زیادہ کسی پیر پر کیوں ہے؟ جب اس پیر کے آستانے پر ایک عورت دردناک تشدد کو سہہ کر آخر کار مر جاتی ہے، تب بھی انہیں اس بات کی پرواہ کیوں نہیں ہوتی؟

وجہ وہی حکمران اور غلط بجٹ ترجیحات۔ جہاں صحت کی سہولیات نایاب ہوتی جا رہی ہوں اور ہسپتالوں میں لوگوں کو دوا تک میسر نہ ہو ایسی حالت میں انہیں یہی لگتا ہے کہ کوئی پیر ہی ان کے لیے مسیحا ہے، جس کے پاس علاج کے طریقے، جلانا، زنجیروں سے باندھنا، لاٹھی برسانا اور ہر قسم کا تشدد ہوتا ہے۔

ہمارے صحت کے شعبے کی حالت یہ ہے کہ آج بھی لاکھوں لوگوں کو بخار کی دوا تک میسر نہیں ہوتی، کیونکہ انہیں ہسپتال تو نظر آتا ہے مگر ان میں ڈاکٹر کسی جن کے طرح غائب رہتا ہے۔

پھر بات آتی ہے تعلیم کی، جو کہ شاید ہمارے حکمرانوں کی ترجیحات کی فہرست میں ہے ہی نہیں، اوپر نیچے ہونا تو دور کی بات ہے۔ آئندہ برس پاکستان قائم ہوئے 70 سال مکمل ہو جائیں گے، مگر یہ ہماری ریاست کا کمال ہے کہ وہ 70 سالوں میں بھی عوام کو مکمل طور پر بنیادی تعلیم اور صحت کی سہولیات فراہم نہیں کر سکی۔

جانیے: پاکستان میں ذہنی بیماریاں اور ہماری بے حسی

قانون؟ وہ کیا ہوتا ہے؟ جب جنتر منتر والے بابوں کو سزا کا کوئی ڈر نہیں پھر انہیں کیا پڑی ہے کہ وہ اپنا دھندا بند کر دیں اور لوگوں کو اپنے جال میں پھسانے کی بجائے انہیں یہ مشورہ دیں کہ بخار ہو جائے تو اس کا مطلب یہ نہیں ہے کہ اسے کسی جن نے اپنے بس میں کر رکھا ہے بلکہ اسے کسی ڈاکٹر کی دوا کی ضرورت ہے۔

کیا یہ سماجی بے حسی نہیں ہے کہ ہم ہمیشہ کسی عورت کے بارے میں ہی سمجھتے ہیں کہ اس پر جنات کا سایہ اور جبکہ مرد حضرات اکثر ڈاکٹر کے پاس ہی جاتے ہیں؟

یہ درد صرف ایک غنویٰ کا نہیں ہے جو لمحہ بہ لمحہ موت کی وادی میں اترتی رہی بلکہ یہ درد ان تمام عورتوں اور لڑکیوں کا ہے جو کہ اس قسم کے ظلم کا شکار ہوتی رہی ہیں۔

مگر ہمیں شاید ایسے سماج میں جینے کی عادت ہو گئی ہے تب ہی اس طرح کی خبریں ہمارے قومی میڈیا پر ہونے والی بحث کا حصہ نہیں بن پاتیں۔

کرکٹرز کی سیاست میں دوسری اننگز شروع کرنے کی یوں تو بہت سی مثالیں ہمارے سامنے ہیں، جیسے عمران خان، عبدالحفیظ کاردار، سرفراز نواز، عامر سہیل، سچن ٹنڈولکر، محمد اظہر الدین، ارجنا رانا ٹنگا، جے سوریا، نواب منصورعلی خان پٹودی، ونود کامبلی، نوجوت سنگھ سدھو، منوج پربھارکر، چیتن چوہان، کرتی آزاد، فرینک ووریل اور دیگر کرکٹرز، جو سیاست کی ''اَن فرینڈلی'' پچ پر بھی جم کر کھیلے۔

ان پلیئرز میں سے سری لنکا کے سنتھ جے سوریا اور ویسٹ انڈیز کے فرینک ووریل 2 ایسے منفرد کرکٹرز ہیں جو کھیل اور سیاست کو ساتھ ساتھ لے کر چلتے رہے۔

ویسٹ انڈیز کے سابق کپتان فرینک ووریل 1962 میں جمیکن پارلیمنٹ کے سینیٹر بنے اور اس سے اگلے سال انہوں نے انگلینڈ کی ٹیم کے خلاف اپنے کریئر کا آخری ٹیسٹ میچ کھیلا، جبکہ سنتھ جے سوریا بھی کرکٹ کریئر کے دوران ہی اپریل 2013 میں سری لنکن پارلیمنٹ کے رکن منتخب ہوئے۔

بچوں بڑوں، خواتین و حضرات میں یکساں مقبول کھیل کرکٹ وقت کے حاکموں کا محبوب مشغلہ بھی رہا ہے۔ آپ کو یہ جان کر حیرت ہوگی کہ پاکستان کے حالیہ وزیراعظم میاں محمد نواز شریف سمیت مختلف ممالک کے 3 وزرائے اعظم سیاست کی بساط کا حصہ بننے سے پہلے کرکٹرز تھے۔

سر ایلک ڈگلس ہوم اکتوبر 1963 میں کنزرویٹو پارٹی کے ٹکٹ پر برطانیہ کے وزیراعظم منتخب ہوئے، لیکن اس سے پہلے 1931 میں وہ ہاؤس آف کامنز کے رکن رہے۔ وہ کرکٹ کو بہت زیادہ پسند کرتے تھے اور سیاست میں آنے سے پہلے انہوں نے 1920 کی دہائی میں لارڈ ڈنگلاس کے نام سے 10 فرسٹ کلاس کرکٹ میچوں میں 6 مختلف ٹیموں (مڈل سیکس کاؤنٹی، آکسفورڈ یونیورسٹی، ایم سی سی کلب، لیونسن گاورز الیون، فری فوریسٹرز، ہارلیکنز) کی بطورمیڈیم فاسٹ باؤلر نمائندگی کی۔ وزارت عظمیٰ کے منصب پر فائز ہونے اور مصروفیات کے باوجود سر ایلک ڈگلس ہوم کے دل میں کرکٹ کے لیے پیار اور خدمت کا جذبہ قائم و دائم رہا، وہ 1966 میں ایم سی سی کے صدر بھی بنے۔

محمد نواز شریف (وزیراعظم پاکستان)

تیسری بار پاکستان کے وزیراعظم بننے والے میاں محمد نواز شریف بھی فرسٹ کلاس کرکٹر رہے ہیں، لیکن ان کا کرکٹ کریئر انتہائی مختصر یعنی صرف ایک میچ تک محیط رہا۔ نواز شریف نے سال 74- 1973 کے دوران پاکستان ریلویز کی جانب سے رائٹ ہینڈ اوپننگ بیٹسمین کی حیثیت سے اپنا فرسٹ کلاس کریئر شروع کیا اور پی آئی اے کی ٹیم کے خلاف میچ کھیلا، جس میں وہ کھاتا کھولنے میں ناکام رہے۔ اس طرح وہ اپنے اولین میچ کو یادگار نہ بنا سکے اور یہ میچ نواز شریف کے فرسٹ کلاس کریئر کا آخری معرکہ بھی ثابت ہوا۔ وہ اس وجہ سے ایک نڈر بیٹسمین مانے جاتے تھے، کیونکہ جب وہ بیٹنگ کے لیے کریز پر آئے تو انھوں نے ہیلمٹ بھی نہیں پہنا ہوا تھا۔
